Enban Record Store / Live House – Koenji

Enban Sign

Usually when I mention to people that I live in Koenji, some people give a certain nod of approval and then go on to talk about what they like about the place and sometimes this place get’s a mention.  Probably the most famous of the 10 or so live houses in Koenji.  It’s a record store during the day and a record store at night but with bands playing and with a tiny bar behind the tiny counter.  I went to see what all the fuss was about and it was quite strange to say the least but I did catch two aweome acts.  Drinking beer listening to a math rock jazz two piece in a smokey record store that holds 20 people max (half of them were in bands!) just seemed so unnatural.  Unfortunately the sites listings are in Japanese so you might need Babelfish to help you out there.  I will be going here quite a bit I think.  It’s a great showcase for bands I think and they all seem to play for free and independently make their own CDs and sell them in the shop too.  Maybe Road in Dublin should do instores on a weekly basis at night time!?

The venue is not easy to find – walk out the JR south exit, walk right, then walk straight ahead over zebra crossing, past the izakyas and it’s on the left about 20 metres further up.  Just look out for the above sign!

  1. This sounds so much fun, I dunno if the regulars just take it for granted but wouldn’t that be a great thing to see here!
Superband look deadly, I’m going to check them out now.

Enemies on Thurs before they head to Japan. We are both anticpating good things, I think!

  2. te_ri were actually better. They were so into it.. Superband started out as J-Pop band but as the set progressed the crazier and more experimental they got. Kaoss pads and a wierd stringed instrument were ripped out of bags and ended up sounding like an crazy Japanese instrumental Joy Division!
